Galería América

Galería América is a gallery space within the Institute, devoted to exhibitions and special programs focusing on some of the most exciting contemporary Latino art and photography. The gallery, a 600 square foot space located on the second floor of McKenna Hall, is open to the public.

Professors from various departments such as English, History, Art, and Theology have incorporated gallery visits into their syllabi, encouraging students to engage with new trends in Latino art in their respective fields of study.

The Galería is also used in conjunction with academic conferences to add a visual and tangible dimension to the scholarly discourse. In 2007 the gallery displayed images by artists from Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts (MCCLA), as well as a number of Bay-Area artists, to complement the national conference “Transnationalism, Transnation, Translation: A Dialogue on the Americas” by exploring the rich cultural heritage of the Americas.

Some other recent exhibitions include Del Corazón del Pueblo, Aztlán y más allá by Rubén Trejo, The Camera’s Eye by Javier Hernández, The Spirit of Memory by Kathy Vargas, and El Pueblo Unido: Poster Art of Global Awareness.
