CLSC Publications

Recent publications reflect the diversity of perspectives in Latino spirituality. The program's four leaders will all publish new books—or produce new videos—within the year, a sign of growing interest in the field. Another sign of interest is the fact that Institute faculty are increasingly called upon to advise higher education groups, dioceses, and governments on issues relating to Latino church life. “We have more requests than we can respond to,” says Elizondo, who serves as an advisor to the White House's Office on Faith-Based and Community Initiatives and is involved in many other service efforts.

In August, 2002, Fr. Daniel Groody, CSC, has published "Border of Death, Valley of Life, An Immigrant Journey of Heart and Spirit" This is a powerful, first-hand account of a religious ministry that reaches out to console, heal, and build the lives of poor and desperate immigrants who come to the United States in search of a better life. Daniel G. Groody talked with immigration officials, "coyote" smugglers, and immigrants in detention centers and those working in the fields.

Also, in November, 2005, Fr. Kenneth G. Davis, O.F.M., Conv., a non-resident fellow of the Institute for Latino Studies published "Preaching the Teaching: Hispanics, Homeletics, and Catholic Social Doctrine." The book reevaluates the Catholic Church's doctrine of social justice as it relates to the Church's flourishing Hispanic communities and their particular concerns, including issues of domestic violence, racism, and immigration policy. Through its initiatives in latino spirituality and culture, the Center hopes to make a significant contribution to the Church and to society for decades to come.
