Graciela Cristina Cárdenas 2004
Artist Statement
Graciela Olivarez, who was born in Nogales in the midst of the Sonoran desert,
was always heavily involved in the themes and problems of the border. She was
a tireless fighter for the rights of women workers; for equal pay, and for
services and benefits for workers who were also mothers.
The intense blue of the clean and inspirational desert evenings are reflected
in Graciela's portrait, the hummingbird representing purity, wisdom, and a
good augur for the life of this great woman lawyer.
The mountains of Sonora appear in the background giving the landscape a
feeling of belonging and nostalgia; the roses are the most common link that
we Latinos use to pay tribute to our beloved persons. These roses float like
Graciela's thoughts of justice; they fly, full of vitality and hope, prophesying
a better future for our brown race.
