The Institute for Latino Studies presents:

Re-imagining Visual Vocabularies
Glugio "Gronk" Nicandro
Thursday, February 1 - Friday, February 23, 2007
Crossroads Gallery, Downtown South Bend
Open Monday-Friday, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Re-imagining Visual Vocabularies will run from Thursday, February 1 through Friday, February 23, 2007, and is free and open to members of the Notre Dame/St. Mary’s community and the general public. Gallery hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Glugio "Gronk" Nicandro was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1954. He is most famously known as simply "Gronk," the middle name given to him by his mother, which means "to fly" in a native Brazilian tongue. Unusually for Chicanos, his Mexican-born parents led an unconventional family life in which Gronk rarely saw his father and shuttled between his mother and various relatives. During his early years art was a way for him to escape the everyday reality of his poverty-stricken environment by creating new worlds for himself.

Gronk attended public schools in East Los Angeles but dropped out with the intent of pursuing his ambitions in the arts as opposed to a traditional trade. He later received his diploma and went on to East Los Angeles College for his BFA and California State University for his MFA.

He began working in performance art with the group that became known as Asco, which included writer/painter Harry Gamboa, painter/photographer Patssi Valdez, and painter Willie Herron. At the same time Gronk was developing his own drawing and solo performance skills and increasing the scale of his paintings.

Through the years surrealist and German expressionist influences have defined Gronk’s work, but he still allows room for growth and strives to reach a broader audience. However his style may change, he always stays true to his Chicano cultural roots. His works typically comment on ethnic identity, pop culture, romantic love, and mortality.

Gronk has had numerous solo exhibitions in the Los Angeles area along with many group shows around the nation. In addition his work can be seen in the permanent collections of several museums.
