Galería América The Institute for Latino Studies presents:
ILS Student Exhibition A group show of 13 student artists Christos Romelia, curator
Sunday, April 5 - Friday, August 14, 2009
McKenna Hall
Institute for Latino Studies
University of Notre Dame
The Institute for Latino Studies is pleased to announce the annual ILS Student Exhibition on display in Galería Ameríca for the 2009 summer season. The exhibition features the works of thirteen student artists from the University of Notre Dame.Through various media, including digital photography, painting, sculpture, and thread art, the exhibition probes our expectations of what constitutes Latino art. Perhaps viewers expect common themes of nationalistic identity that reaffirms Latin-ness. Or maybe there should be a certain leaning toward a pre-Columbian, Spanish, or pre-Thanksgiving United States aesthetic. Or perhaps we should leave the definition of “Latino art” open and fluid. What arise out of the encounter with the “Latino art” of these Notre Dame students are individualized contemplations on one’s existence in the world, the communities one is born into, and the faith or faithlessness one is born into.
