The Institute for Latino Studies (ILS) is pleased to announce a call for applications for two summer 2016 grants to fund undergraduate student research. The two topics are: 1) current policies and practices of institutions of higher education regarding admission to graduate and professional schools for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) students, and 2) current policies, practices, and related strategies for funding graduate education for DACA students. This competition is open to any current Notre Dame undergraduate student who will be returning (or studying abroad) for the fall 2016 semester.
The purpose of these grants is to enable students to spend their summer doing research. Students may design their projects independently or propose a project related to some aspect of a faculty member’s ongoing research. The specific project will be supervised by Luis R. Fraga and Timothy Matovina, Co-Directors, Institute for Latino Studies.
Each recipient will receive a summer honorarium of $3,000, with the possibility of an additional $1,000 budgeted for research travel or other research-related needs. Students who receive a summer research grant are expected to dedicate six weeks of the summer to their research project with no internship or other paid work responsibilities during the research time period.
Please submit your application online to Idalia Maldonado, Institute for Latino Studies, imaldona@nd.edu, by Friday, March 18. The research proposal application should include the following:
- A 100-200 word abstract describing the proposed project and highlighting its significance and major goals.
- A two-page project description that includes (a) a background section summarizing any research previously done in the area of the project; (b) a presentation of research goals explaining what the outcome of the work will be and why it is significant; (c) a description and justification of the methodology that will be employed; and (d) a schedule that specifies dates for the initiation and completion of each phase of the project.
- If applicable, a budget that lists research related expenses up to $1,000.
- A letter of recommendation from a faculty member at Notre Dame.
