Latino Leadership Internship Program

The initial Leadership Intern Program began in 2001. The summer of 2007 found Latino Leadership Interns Jaime Luna and Linette Aguirre serving at St. Pius V/Casa Juan Diego in Chicago, Pamela Ruiz with the Resurrection Project in Chicago, Lauren Lyman and Ilse TerrazasOrtega at Interfaith Leadership Project in Berwyn and CiceroDanielee Espinoza at Corazón Community Services Edianys Deynes with Schwab Rehab Hospital, and Eddie Gutierrez worked with Little Village Community Development Corporation in Chicago.

Four students will be immersed as interns in community-based organizations in the Little Village and
Pilsen neighborhoods of Chicago, Cicero and Berwyn for eight weeks to live as members of, learn from,
and serve the Latino community. Successful applicants must be fluent in Spanish, have a strong interest in
issues facing the Latino community, and significant previous service experience.

Sites:
Students will grow as servant leaders in their work on issues affecting Latino youth and adults in the
areas of immigration, violence prevention, community organizing and health care.

Timeline:

The internship will provide:

Fees:
A $50 participation fee will be charged to accepted students.
Travel to and from Chicago for the internship is the responsibility of the student.

The Center for Social Concerns and the Institute for Latino Studies collaborate to offer this 3-credit course, which is also cross-listed in Theology.

Academic Requirements:
Attend all preparatory classes and orientation activities:

Register for three-credit course (ILS35801, CSC33933, or THEO33933), contact Karen Richman for more information. (Credit is granted in Fall of 2010, after students successfully complete
all requirements.)

Read all course books and course packet articles.

Complete study questions during the summer and send to the program directors after 4 weeks at
the internship.

Interview three leaders in the community during the summer.

Keep a journal.

Participate in reflection sessions with facilitator and other interns (approximately 3 times during
summer).

Present at retreat for interns and supervisors in Chicago, late July 2010.

Write synthesis paper at the end of the experience, due upon return to campus.

Participate in all follow up activities in fall 2010.

Required follow-up activities:

Dinner discussion with other interns
Individual debriefing with program directors
Share experiences with others in residence hall or in classes
Involvement in Latino community and/or student groups through Center or Institute programs
