Cross-Cultural Leadership Internship Program - Chicago

Five students will be accepted as interns in community-based organizations in the Little Village and Pilsen neighborhoods of Chicago, Cicero and Berwyn. The Center for Social Concerns and the Institute for Latino Studies collaborate to offer this 3-credit course, which is also cross-listed in Theology. Three credit courses to be in Theology, Catholic Social Tradition, or Latino Studies ILS 35801, CST 33933, or THEO 33933.

Objectives

  • Students will grow as servant leaders in their work on issues affecting Latino youth and adults in the areas of immigration, violence prevention, community organizing and health care
  • Students will learn the theory and practice of community organizing
  • Students will understand the methods of leadership development
  • Students will address grassroots community issues
  • Students will experience the connection between service, policy and social change
  • Students will learn how to bring together groups of people for a common goal
  • Students will be a part of the faith connection to community organizing
