Letras Latinas, the literary initiative of the Institute for Latino Studies and the Creative Writing Program presents a poetry event with Farid Matuk, Associate Professor, Department of English, The University of Arizona.  

Matuk will be reading from him latest book: The Real Horse.


A light pre-reception and book signing will take place prior to the reading. The Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore will be onsite for book sales.

Born in Lima, Peru to a Syrian mother and Peruvian father, Farid Matuk has lived in the United States since the age of six as an undocumented person, a "legal" resident, and a patriated citizen. He is the author of the poetry collections This Isa Nice Neighborhood (Letter Machine) and The Real Horse (University of Arizona Press), and of several chapbooks including My Daughter La Chola (Ahsahta) and from Don't Call It Reginald Denny (Society Editions). His work has been anthologized in The Best American Experimental Poetry, 2014 and in Angels of the Americlypse: An Anthology of New Latino@ Writing, among others. Matuk's poems and translations from Spanish appear in journals such as Floor: A Journal of Aesthetic Experiments, Boundary 2, The Boston Review, Denver Quarterly, Poetry, and The Nation. His essays and interviews can be found in Scubadivers and Chrysanthemums: Essays on the Poetry of Araki YasusadaThe Force of What's Possible: Writers on Accessibility and the Avant-GardeThe Racial Imaginary: Writers on Race in the Life of the Mind, The Boston Review, Entropy, Bomb, and Cross-Cultural Poetics. Matuk serves on the editorial teams at Fence and The American Age.

 

This event will also be part of the Institute's Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration.
