Given the controversial narratives that have emerged about immigrants, it is important to recognize the existing immigration narratives in academia, journalism, and media. This panel and public discussion will explore how Latinos have been misrepresented and underrepresented and how they have persevered and even thrived in industries that have ignored or been hostile to immigrant narratives.
Panelists Lalo Alcaraz, political cartoonist, consulting producer, and writer; Gustavo Arellano, author and former Publisher and Editor of OC Weekly; and Adrian Felix, Assistant Professor of Ethnic Studies, University of California, Riverside will discuss the importance of academic efforts to substantively reflect and explore the consequences of the influx of Mexicans as the largest segment of immigrants, and also consider the day-to-day voices that counter the negative stereotypes of Mexican and Latino immigrants.
A pre-reception will be held in the McKenna Hall Atrium at 4:00PM and the panel discussion will begin promptly at 5:00PM in the McKenna Hall Auditorium
