Join us in the upcoming Teach-In 2019: Journey for Justice, formerly known as Jornada Por La Justicia / Pilgrimage for Justice, organized by the HOPE Initiative and the Latinx Catholic Leadership Coalition. The Teach-In will look at the intersection of race and border politics and how we can turn back this movement of hate with a movement of love.
What is the Teach-In 2019: Jornada por la Justicia?
The Teach-In 2019: Jornada por la Justicia is a three-day gathering of a powerful network of Catholic Latino organizers, labor leaders, scholars and activists to make real change through concrete action. The Teach-In will feature workshops, leadership tools, strategy sessions, coalition building, nationally recognized speakers and direct public action. This year’s presenters will include activist and theologian Msgr. Arturo Bañuelas; Dr. Neomi DeAnda, president of the Academy of Hispanic Theologians of the United States; Dr. Luis Fraga, Director of the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame; as well as local and national social justice leaders. Bishop Mark J. Seitz will celebrate the concluding Mass on Sunday, Oct. 13.

Why Now?
This moment in time requires bold action from Latinx leaders from across the country and across sectors to enter the public square on behalf of justice, demand an end to racism and the politics of xenophobia and stand in solidarity with migrants and targeted communities everywhere. The Teach-In 2019: Jornada por la Justicia is an opportunity for Latinx Catholic leaders to gather at the border to collectively stand against racism, hateful immigration policy and the ongoing militarization of our communities as well as to celebrate our unique heritage and strengths. Not only will participants learn more about border politics and human rights from the perspective of Catholic social teaching, they will also be steeped in the unique culture and history of El Paso and Ciudad Juárez and have an opportunity to enjoy fellowship with each other. The teach-in portion of the weekend will include a public action to demand human dignity in the borderlands. We anticipate that this event will be a formative and powerful one, and we look forward to your presence with us.
Who are the coordinators of this gathering?
HOPE is an independent Catholic organization that brings the perspective of Catholic social teaching to bear on the realities unique to our US-Mexico border region. Through a robust program of research and policy work, leadership development and action, HOPE works to build justice and deepen solidarity across the borderlands.
The Latinx Catholic Leadership Coalition is a new initiative born out of the III National Symposium on Catholic Hispanic Ministry held at the University of Notre Dame, hosted by the Institute for Latino Studies, this past July. This national group of scholars, theologians, ministers and community organizers is committed to envisioning the future of Latinx Catholic Leadership across the country.
Travel & Lodging Accommodations
ILS is sponsoring 24 students to participate in the teach-in. Travel and lodging arrangements will be made by the Coalition for Spiritual & Public Leadership (CSPL) in Chicago. They will be busing from Chicago to El Paso on Wednesday, October 9th and arriving back in Chicago on Monday, October 14th. ILS will provide students transportation to and from Chicago. Spaces are first come, first serve. Save your spot and let us know of your availability here by Wednesday, October 2nd at 5:00 PM.
Non-ND students are still encouraged to fill out the ILS Registration Form, but travel and lodging arrangements will not be covered by ILS. We encourage you to consider traveling with CSPL from Chicago. They are offering travel and lodging arrangements for a fee of $400. Their itinerary is listed here: El Paso Pilgrimage Itinerary.
