Grammy-winning Chicana/o musicians Quetzal Flores and Dr. Martha Gonzalez will be in conversation with Dr. Alex E. Chávez to discuss his critically-acclaimed album Sonorous Present and address the possibilities of multi-modal scholarship to expand our understanding of and advocate for what arts-based methodologies can achieve in these times. This moderated discussion is scheduled on the eve of their DeBartolo Performing Arts Center concert October 2nd. Created through a collaborative, immersive, and ethnographic research-based process, Chávez’s Sonorous Present is a suite of compositions that meditates on the U.S.-Mexico borderlands through sound and memory. The album—produced by Quetzal Flores integrates Chavez’s experience and talents as an artist, musician, and scholar in order to reimagine the forms scholarship can take.
