Beautiful Borders is a one-day symposium that explores the unique role of music in Texas-Mexico border culture and culminates in a film screening of the 50th anniversary 4K restoration of the Les Blank/Chris Strachwitz film Chulas Fronteras (1976), paired with Del Mero Corazón (1979).
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Maureen Gosling (Assistant Editor of Chulas Fronteras and Director of Del Mero Corazón) and Juan Antonio Cuéllar (Archivist at Los Cenzontles Music and Art Academy), moderated by Dr. Alex E. Chávez. During the afternoon symposium, Gosling and Cuéllar will be joined by Dr. Micaela Diáz-Sánchez (Professor of Chicana/o Studies, UC-Santa Barbara), Monterrey, Mexico-based media producer Jorge Balleza, and Omar Lozano of Austin, TX label Trucha Soul. The film screening will be preceded by a performance featuring corrido singer Gallo Armado (Monterrey, Mexico)
