On April 4th, 2025, Notre Dame students, faculty, and community members gathered in Washington Hall for an unforgettable evening of community, memory, and culture. Latin Expressions is the signature showcase and talent event hosted annually by the Latinx Student Alliance.

From traditional folklórico dances and live music to spoken word poetry, Latin Expressions brought together the Latinx community at Notre Dame again. The room came alive with a shared appreciation for the expression of our culture and experience, with students sharing their hopes, dreams, and art in personal, bombastic, and bittersweet acts made with love and effort.

“Latin Expressions–it’s in the name, coming together under the banner of Expressions to express our love and sense of community is what allows us to become stronger and to consolidate here at Notre Dame, to become something more than what we are as just individuals. It’s truly beautiful.”

– Trey Lopez, ‘27 Co-Chair of Latin Expressions

“It was wonderful to see the Latinx community come together to showcase what being Latinx means to them. This shows the strong and passionate familia embedded within Notre Dame, representing our history, dreams, experiences, and truths. As part of the Latinx Student Alliance, we look forward to continuing to build this community and, with Expressions, leave a legacy for the future.”

– Daniela Rivera, ‘27 Co-Chair of Latin Expressions

This year’s showcase was made possible through the generous support of our sponsors and advisors: S. Paloma Garcia Lopez, Associate Director of the Institute for Latino Studies, and Alyssa Ngo, Assistant Director of Student Leadership at Multicultural Student Programs and Services (MSPS). Special thanks to April Garcia (ND ‘05, M.Ed. ‘07, M.A. ‘13), Assistant Teaching Professor in the Institute for Educational Initiatives, who joined this year as LSA’s new club advisor.

This year’s Latin Expressions formed part of the year-long SomosND campaign honoring Latino student and faculty contributions to Our Lady’s University. During intermission, LSA shared a video interview with Assistant Professor of History Emiliano Aguilar, where he discussed his research on the history of Latinos at ND. Our audience learned that the first organization of Latino students was formed in the early 1900s. Latin Expressions served as the capstone event for the year and is widely remembered by Hispanic Alumni of Notre Dame. Club Advisor, April Garcia shares, “As we celebrate 35 years of Latin Expressions, it is impressive to see the sheer talent of students, but also the genuine celebration and joy in the opportunity to celebrate aspects of their culture and identity that are meaningful to them.”
