The Institute for Latino Studies is mourning the tragic loss of Mayra Martinez, who died along with her husband Jeremy, in a car accident in France on August 6. Mayra touched everyone she met with her brilliance, compassion, and joyfulness. Mayra graduated in 2015 with majors in Anthropology and French and a minor in Latino Studies. She also participated in the Institute’s summer internship program, CCLP in Chicago in 2013. Mayra’s interest in Latino Studies and immigration was connected to her own life experience growing up in Chicagoland as part of a large transnational family network with roots in Guanajuato, México. We were honored to have met several members of Mayra’s family at her joyous graduation and we share our deepest condolences with them.
