CCLP San Juan Puerto Rico

The Institute for Latino Studies is offering a new summer enrichment experience in San Juan Puerto Rico.  This program includes:

  • A Summer service learning and immersion experience based on the existing Cross Cultural Leadership Program model that ILS implements in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, DC. each summer   

  • ND Partnership with the University of Sagrado Corazon and local community organizations that address sustainability issues in San Juan

  • 7 week commitment from June 1 to July 23, 2019

  • 3-4 Orientation meetings with an ILS faculty fellow are provided on campus in April

  • Immersion in a U.S. Latino community, university environment, and city

  • Fluent Spanish conversation, reading, and writing strongly desired

  • Living in a university dorm with fellow ND students in the program, approx. 5

 

The program is open to all undergraduates who apply through the regular Cross Cultural Leadership Program application available online at latinostudies.nd.edu through 3/14/19.   Latino Studies Scholars and Latino Studies supplementary major/minors benefit from priority placement in the program. The Puerto Rico immersion experience will have a 3 week service-learning course at the front end and a full-time, four week internship at an organization that fits your career interests, such as:

  • Environmental issues -  Hurricane recovery and justice issues

  • Water resources - biology, research from lab to community

  • Education - literacy and early childhood education

  • Public Health - clinical experience and disease prevention/education

  • Community development -neighborhood resource groups

  • Economic development - business and marketing plans

  • Communications - short film documentaries, marketing, social media

  • Government - distribution of resources after the hurricane

  • Foundation - philanthropic grants towards recovery

  • Computer Science - programming and tutoring students and agencies

  • Civil Rights - legal, poverty and social stratification issues

*The cost to participate is $7000.  ILS has limited funding.  Students should seek resources to offset the costs of the program by asking their department, honors program, or Scholars program first.  Students may apply for campus for funding from Kellogg, CUSE; ISLA Summer Comprehensive Grant (up to $4,500 for a research project aligned with the CCLP/University of Sagrado Corazon course) and the Career Development internship funding as well.
