Performing Arts and Culture Program

ILS supports cultural expression and engagement through vibrant performing arts and culture programming that celebrates Latino heritage at Notre Dame and beyond. These opportunities are available to both undergraduate and graduate students in the tri-campus community.

In 2022, ILS introduced Ballet Folklórico Dance Instruction through a one-credit course led by Associate Director Paloma Garcia-Lopez, complementing the student group Ballet Folklórico Azúl y Oro. As a curricular counterpart to Mariachi ND, Garcia-Lopez also founded the Mariachi Education Program, a one-credit course developed with the support of former ILS Director Professor Luis Fraga, and Anthropology Professor Alex Chávez.

In August 2024, ILS launched its first annual Leadership Academy and Performing Arts Bootcamp. Held during Welcome Week, the three-day intensive program features professional dance instructors and ethnomusicologists as master teachers to students promoting Mexican arts and culture on campus.
