As part of the Transformative Latino Leadership Lecture series the Institute for Latino Studies welcomes José Angel Gutiérrez, an activist, attorney, and professor emeritus at the University of Texas, Arlington. He received the National Hispanic Hero Award in 2019 from the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute in Chicago, Illinois. He has authored 18 books. His latest publication titled FBI Files on Mexicans and Chicanos, 1940-1980: The Eagle Is Watching was released in 2021.

He was a founding member and president of both the Mexican American Youth Organization (MAYO) in San Antonio and the Raza Unida Party, a Mexican-American third party movement that supported candidates for elective office in Texas, California, and other areas of the Southwestern and Midwestern United States.
