MLK Celebration Luncheon

Location: Joyce Center, North Dome

Diane Nash will be the keynote speaker at this luncheon. Nash became a leader in the Civil Rights Movement in 1959 while a student at Fisk University. By the time she was 22, Nash was a Freedom Rider and had co-founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). She worked closely with Dr. King and played a pivotal role in the Selma Voting Rights Movement.

The Cross-Cultural Leadership Program (CCLP) engages students in real-world applications of their academic studies through summer service learning in Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. 

Students in this three-credit, eight-week summer course will be immersed in community-based and national organizations. They will also engage in critical study related to their service learning in a class led by an ILS professor. To promote full immersion in this service-learning experience, students will not be placed in their home communities.…

Limón Best Paper in Latino Studies, for written work done on U.S. Latino communities, to support scholarly work by undergraduate and graduate students consistent with the mission of the Institute for Latino Studies. Through scholarship and teaching, the  Institute for Latino Studies advances understanding of the fastest-growing and youngest population in the United States and the U.S. Catholic Church. At present, 17% of all people in the U.S. and 40% of all Catholics in the U.S. are Latino/Hispanic. Exemplary papers will be awarded $250 and $500 awards in April 2020.…
