Lets celebrate!

Last week, we shared a video from PBS Learning Media that answered the question, "Why do we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month?". In addition to learning about why we celebrate, it's also important to know who we are celebrating. This week, we're featuring a collection of resources from the website Spanish Mama that shines a spotlight on labor and civil rights leader Dolores Huerta.

The collection includes a biography as well as resources ranging from videos to coloring pages to reading passages with comprehension questions, so you can easily customize a lesson for your classroom. Pick and choose the resources that you want to use and then develop a lesson from there, or see our lesson-planning suggestions below. And if you'd like to learn more about other famous Latinos, Spanish Mama has also curated a list (with resources) of 40 famous Latinos and Hispanic Americans you should know about.

Here are our suggestions for spotlighting Dolores Huerta—or another famous Latina or Latino—in an upcoming lesson:

  • Elementary School
    • First, show students an image of Dolores Huerta & share a brief biography of her life
    • Then, ask students to point out things they notice in the image that connect to Dolores Huerta's biography
    • If you're looking for other individuals to learn about, Spanish Mama has created coloring pages of Latina/Latino leaders that can provide some inspiration
  • Middle/High School
    • First, choose a famous Hispanic/Latino person who is connected to your content area & show an image of the person
    • Next, have students research the person's life and work
    • Then, discuss content connections between students' research & what you're currently studying, have studied, or will study in class
